WHAT'S NEWThe public workforce system continues to play a pivotal role in keeping the Territory’s workforce in sync with the constantly changing workplace environment. Whether it is honing new technological skills or acquiring theoretical knowledge on emerging industries, the worker of the 21st century must remain engaged in some form of higher education in order to be competitive on the job or even in the job market. President Barak Obama has challenged US citizens to have “the best educated, most competitive workforce in the world”. The US Virgin Islands is part of that challenge group. Gone are the days when anyone can look at the fluctuating economic situation of the world and think, “Oh, that’s over there, it has no effect on me”. We are all affected and all must be personally prepared to contribute to strengthening the economy. Throughout Program Year 2011, the VI Workforce Investment Board (WIB) will spearhead the implementation of several strategies designed to give our community the competitive edge needed to survive and excel in this economy. These include the development of Career Pathways; a renewed focus on On-the-Job Training; and a roll-out of community-based Access Points. More information on these initiatives will be made available in the coming months. Employers interested in acquiring more information or participating in any of the Workforce Board’s activities are encouraged to contact the VI Workforce Investment Board at (340) 773-5237 or
